Through independent, civilian oversight of the Village Public Safety Departments, the Fire and Police Commission strives to enhance public safety for our residents, promote accountability and public trust, increase diversity within the departments, and safeguard the constitutional rights of all people.
Rules / Regulations
The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners manage the Police Department as prescribed under the Illinois Municipal Code 65 ILCS 5 / Article 10-2.1. The Commissioners recruit, select, and appoint qualified candidates to fill vacancies for the original appointment of Village Police Officers. The Commissioners determine testing and selection processes that allow qualified employees to participate in the promotional process for the positions of Sergeant and Lieutenant within the Police Department. The Commissioners also conduct hearings and render decisions on disciplinary matters for both departments, as provided for in the collective bargaining agreements.
Board Meetings
The meetings for the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are held quarterly on the 3rd Tuesday of January, April, July, and October at the Rantoul Police Department in the Conference Room located at 109 E. Grove Ave, Rantoul, IL 61866. Special meetings may be scheduled as required.

Board Commissioners
The Board consists of three commissioners appointed by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees. Each member serves a three year term.
