  • Call the Rantoul Police Department at (217) 892-2103. Even if we do not have your pet, we will record the details and your contact information and call you should your pet be located.

  • Call the Rantoul Police at (217) 892-2103 to find out if the pet has been reported as missing. If so, animal control will attempt to contact the rightful owner(s). If you wish to hold on to the pet for a few days to see if the owner turns up, you should leave a found report. Otherwise you may request that the animal be picked up.

  • If you own a dog or cat, you are required to have the animal vaccinated. The animal must be vaccinated at four months of age or older. Any new residence to the Village of Rantoul has 30 days to vaccinate their animal. The animal must be current on its rabies vaccination and you must be able to provide proof.

  • If the deceased animal is located on a Village of Rantoul street call Rantoul Public Works at (217) 892-6526. If the deceased animal is your pet, you may wish to contact your veterinarian to discuss your options for disposal. Wild animals not located on a public street should be disposed of by an adult by using gloves or a shovel to place the animal inside two plastic bags then placing it in the trash.

If the wild animal is a nuisance in the attic or crawlspace, there are private businesses you may contact to assist you in animal removal.     Please note that state law requires a permit for trapping animals. Trapping wildlife without a permit is illegal.

  • Animal Control has restrictions on the types of animals that can be kept in the city. A pot-bellied pig is considered swine which is prohibited in Village of Rantoul. Before acquiring any animal other than a dog or cat, be sure to check with Animal Control to make sure you can legally keep the animal in your neighborhood. Generally speaking, the following are illegal:
    • All poisonous snakes and reptiles including alligators and similar animals
    • All primates
    • All bears
    • All wild or exotic cats including hybrids
    • All wild canines and hybrids such as wolf crosses
    • All wild native and exotic animals such as raccoons, skunks, otters, opossums, bats, deer, and antelopes

  • The Rantoul Police Department will respond to reports of stray animals, animal bites, animal abuse, or inquiries about any other animal-related issues. Any dog or cat not on the premises of its owner or such other person who has custody, possession, or control over the animal and is not on a leash is considered “at large” or a stray animal. Any dog or cat brought into any shop, store, or retail establishment during operating hours, or into any public building at any time (unless the dog or cat are working animals) shall be considered “at large.”

  • Callers are only required to leave their name in certain situations. When a caller requests to remain anonymous, Rantoul Police will respect this request. Rantoul Police will never refuse to send help to an anonymous call unless directed to do so by the responsible public safety agency based on the type of call. Rantoul Police will never disclose the identity of a caller to anyone but authorized public safety officials. Your name, address, and/or phone number helps us if we need to contact you to obtain any additional information for the responding units. That being said, the courts will often give more weight to information that is provided by someone who is willing to be identified versus an anonymous tip.

A call of an accident, for instance, where the cars are all out of traffic might be assigned a lower priority level. But, an accident with injuries would be assigned a higher priority level, which indicates it is an emergency and a unit would be dispatched even if they may have to be called off of a lower priority call.

  • A deposit is required on all accounts, unless you own the property. The deposit remains on the account until the account is terminated or 3 years of good service, meaning no missed payments. If the account is for commercial use, the deposit will be based on 2 times the average bill.

  • A meter reader from the Public Works Department will read the meters once a month, the date is based on billing area. The readings are then sent to the Utility Billing Office where a report is ran to flag any questionable readings, a work order will be issued to reread the meters and correct readings, if needed. A billing update is then done to process the bills, they are then printed and sent to the post office immediately.
    Bills are due 20 days from the print date. If you do not receive a bill please call our office or email us, requesting a copy of your bill. The due date will appear on each billing statement, there will be a two-day grace period from the due date before any late fees are accessed on the account.
    Contact our office immediately if there is a dispute in your billing statement. A work order may be issued to recheck the meters and will be returned to our office usually in one or two business days.
    If a meter is estimated due to not having access to the meters, the customer can call or email our office with the correct readings, they will be entered on your account according to the billing dates. Please make sure to include name on the account, address, and a contact number.

  • The Purchased Power Adjustment is a charge added to each month’s bill to provide for the increasing cost of electricity from the Village’s electric supplier. This charge will change from month to month based on our cost of electricity. The Purchased Power Adjustment rate applies to all kilowatt hours used each month.

  • Gas supply is the amount of consumption the customer uses, the cost per therm will vary each month and the gas service charge is what it costs the Village of Rantoul to maintain the gas lines, the meters, and to service the customer.

  • A disconnection of service will occur 15 - 20 days from the due date of the bill. A disconnection notice will be sent out with a current bill, providing a date of disconnect. If payment or agreement is not made on the account by the date of the disconnection notice, the service will be terminated the following day.
    A $50 reconnection fee will need to be paid along with the past due balance for service to be reconnected. If service is disconnected a following time, an additional deposit will be required on the account.
    Regional Planning Commission of Champaign County will assist customers by pledging payment on the account. Customers can call (217) 384-1226 to inquire about the program and the guidelines for qualifications.
    There are no reconnections after 4:00 pm. Payments received after 4:00 pm will be reconnected the following business day. All reconnections are done between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 pm, regardless of the time payment.

  • Cycle and route information can be found on all current bills and past due notices. This information will help determine when your utility bill will be is due and how far you can extend out a payment agreement.   • A medical form must be completed and signed by your doctor every 30 days. The doctor must state that it is life threatening, it will not be accepted without that stated. If this is to get service reconnected and a payment will not be recieved immediately, a limiter will be placed on the meter to allow enough power to operate the medical devices, the limiter will not be removed until the full past due balace is paid along with a $50 service fee to remove the limiter. If the past due is not paid within 30 days of the date on the medical, the limiter will be removed and service disconnected until the account is brought up to date with payment. This medical can be faxed back to our office at (217) 893-0503. This is the customers responsiblity to make sure the Customer Service office will accept this medical.

  • Persons arrested by the Rantoul Police Department may be brought to the Rantoul PoIice Department for processing and release, or depending on the type of charges, may be taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center.   • Call 9-1-1 in an emergency when you believe that the immediate response of the police, fire, or ambulance is needed. Some examples of when a 9-1-1 call is appropriate are:
    • When you see a fire. 
    • When you see or smell smoke. 
    • When you or someone with you is in danger. 
    • When you see a crime is being committed or has just occurred. 
    • When you believe that an ambulance is needed because someone is hurt or sick. 
    • When someone is trying to get in your home. 
    • When someone suspicious is prowling around your house or neighbor’s house.

  • The police department does not investigate crashes on private property, such as parking lots, unless certain circumstances exist. A police officer will respond and conduct an investigation on private property when any of the following circumstances exist:
    • There is an injury to anyone involved in the crash.
    • Any driver is under the influence.
    • The crash is a hit-and-run.
    • Any driver does not possess proof of valid insurance.
    • A reckless driving offense occurred.
    If you have an accident on private property, download and complete the Private Property Accident Information Exchange Form. This form is intended to help you obtain necessary information about the other parties involved in a non-injury accident on private property in which less than $1,500 damage occurred.

  • Vehicles are impounded for various reasons under village ordinance. The most common reason is from an arrest of a driver. The arresting officer will issue a form called Notice of Seizure to the driver which informs the driver why the vehicle was seized. A hold is placed on the vehicle until the penalty is paid. After a seizure occurs, the procedure to get it back is for the owner to come to the front desk of the police department and pay $500. The tow company will then be notified that the hold is lifted. The owner will have to go the respective tow company to get their vehicle. The owner is responsible for paying the tow company the towing and storage fee.

  • The owner must file a written request with the Rantoul Police Department within 15 days of receiving notice of impoundment. A hearing is held in front of an administrative hearing officer to determine whether the driver of the owner's vehicle was in violation of village ordinance. If the administrative hearing officer rules in favor of the village, the $500 penalty stands. If the hearing officer rules in favor of the driver, the $500, if paid, is returned to the owner.

  • During a snowfall where an accumulation of two or more inches occur, vehicles may not park or remain parked on designated streets. If vehicles are parked on the designated streets, the Rantoul Police Department has authorization to tow the vehicles at the owners’ expense. After the snowfall has stopped and all snow has been removed from the designated streets, vehicles may again park in these areas. View snow route map.

  • Illinois Laws on Cellphone Use While Driving: • It is illegal to use a cellphone while driving, including reading or sending text messages. • Cellphone use is permitted only if using a hands-free device or Bluetooth® technology. • Cellphone use is allowed to call 9-1-1, but the driver should first stop the vehicle and pull off the road. Violation of these laws may result in a fine and a moving violation on your driving record.

  • Yes, fingerprinting is offered to the public via appointment only. Currently, the police department is ONLY accepting fingerprinting appointments for prospective school employees, and tenants of Hope Meadows. Please call the Police Department at 217-892-2103 to schedule an appointment.

  • No, the Rantoul Police Department does not open motor vehicles in which people have locked their keys. Many vehicles’ locking mechanism are complex and require specially trained people to open them. We suggest you call an insured locksmith or tow truck company for these situations. We will attempt to open car doors in emergencies. In these cases, we will attempt to unlock the car, but may be required to resort to other measures if the situation dictates.

  • Contact the officer who initially took your report or the detective who was assigned to it by calling the Rantoul Police Department at (217) 892-2103. You may leave a message if the officer or detective is not available. You may also check the staff directory and send the officer or detective an email.

  • Contrary to what many believe, there is no minimum amount of time that must pass before a person can be considered missing. Rantoul police will accept a missing person report and promptly initiate an investigation.

  • You may contact the police department 24 hours a day by telephone and ask to speak with an on-duty supervisor who will try to immediately address your complaint. If you are wanting to come to the Rantoul Police Department and make a complaint, the lobby is open from 7am to 5pm Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

    If the supervisor is unable to satisfy your complaint, the supervisor upon your request, will provide you with a written complaint form, and detailed written instructions on how to pursue a formal written complaint. Once completed and returned to the Police Department, you will be contacted by a member of police management, and the formal complaint process will begin.

  • Reports are available from the Rantoul Police Department through our records office. A written request is required to fulfill report requests in an efficient manner. An online request form is available or forms may be picked up at the Rantoul Police Department. These requests are then submitted to the records office where a thorough search of our records in conducted. The information is then dispersed based on the guidelines for law enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).   • Evidence seized in a misdemeanor criminal case is held until the disposition of the case. Evidence seized in a felony criminal case is generally held until 30 days after the disposition of the case. On certain crimes property cannot be released without court order or approval from the State Attorney’s Office. Found property can generally be released immediately.   • Registration is done by simply completing and submitting a form that describes the property type. The Owner Occupied Exemption form is for property where the owner resides as their principle residence. Rental Registration & Inspection Application applies to all residential rental property. The Vacant Residential Property Registration form applies to residential property that will be vacant for 30 days or more.
